I love the CMP part the second

The rifles arrived not long after my last post. The Carbine is pretty clean, but the Garand is pretty gunked up with cosmolene. Condition seems to be good at first glance; bright shiny bores with sharp rifling. The wood is pretty good; scratches and dings, but I didn't see any cracks or anything. I'll look them over further when I have more time. I was pleased to note that my IBM Carbine has a matching IBM barrel. The adjustable sights cover the maker's name on the receiver, so the barrel stamped IBM Corp will make it easier to show off to non-gunnie friends.

Sweeeeet.

One of the days I need to put an order in for an M1 carbine.

Would be nice to have one in functional form...

They're fresh out of service grades, but they have rack grades left. There's supposed to be another big batch of returns from Greece in 2009.

I have got to get to a shoot so I can qualify to get one of these. . . .

I have got to get off my ass. . .

Do you suggest going this rout vs buying a new or used one from a gun store like Four Seasons??

Do you save enough money to make it worth it? I have not dug enough into this yet to know. . .

JD, just go and get your C&R license... its only $30 for 3 years and once you get it, you can fax a copy to midwayusa.com and you get upwards of 20% off as a dealer with them... you will make the $30 back the first time you buy from them. the C&R does qualify for shooting proficiency with the CMP.

JD,

I'm pretty certain that having your LTC is enough to qualify for the CMP. GOAL is an affiliated club, also.

Anyone know if a FID is enough? Or do you need a LTC?

Ted, because they're high-cap rifles, I belive an LTC B is the minimum permit required....or residency in Free-State America : ]

The M1 carbine is hi-cap, but the Garand isn't. 8 round en-blocs baby! The coolest sound in shooting. I ejected an empty clip like 10 times the other day to listen to the noise.

You could argue on whether the M1 carbine is a hi-cap or not. The only M1 carbine on the 'high capacity weapons roster' is Iver Johnson. Therefore, it's only hi-cap if you also possess a hi-cap mag. The CMP carbines don't come with magazines, so you could buy a 10 rounder from midway and be good to go with an FID.

There are a few different issues with qualifying for the CMP. You need to prove the following:
1. US Citizenship
2. Age
3. Membership in CMP affiliated organization
4. Proof of participation in marksmanship activity.
5. Legal eligibility to purchase/own a firearm.

I used a birth certificate to cover 1 and 2. I used my GOAL membership card for 3. If you're a MA resident and not a GOAL member, you should join anyway. Many gun clubs are also affiliated. If neither your club nor your state association is an affiliate, the Garand Collectors Association is supposed to be one of the cheapest and easiest. There's a list of ways to cover 4; I sent a copy of the results for the MA State IDPA championship. I could've also used the slip I got for participating in an Appleseed. Concealed carry license is on the list too, but I didn't want to confuse things, as I was using that for 5. In MA, 5 is a copy of your FID/LTC, in a free state it's passing NICS.

Thanks for the info. I will have to add that to my list of guns I need to get . . .

So many guns, so little money.

Great info. I have to admit that the Garand looks sweet. Sounds like the People's Republic isn't prejudiced against the greatest battle inplement ever designed.

Just goes to show that the laws are made by idiots.
